The Kinabatangan is a different river after dark. A night cruise is a great alternative to exploring the forest on foot after sunset, and it is the best way we know to look for the animals that only show themselves once the sun has gone.
What you might see
Estuarine crocodiles are the headline act, both juveniles and full-grown adults, usually picked out first by the shine of their eyes in the spotlight. Beyond that, expect various species of owl and sleeping birds such as kingfishers roosting low over the water, close enough to look at properly for the first time. Other surprises wait as well. Guests have seen anything from a clouded leopard to pygmy elephants on this cruise. It really just depends on luck.
Aside from the wildlife, a night cruise is a breath of fresh air after dinner. There are very few other boats out, and the tranquility of the river at night, all insects and frogs and the occasional splash, is worth the trip on its own.
Booking and timing
- Departure is usually 8pm, after dinner. Check with your guide or reception on the day.
- The cost is RM100 per person. This is an optional extra rather than part of your package.
- A minimum of 2 people is required for the cruise to depart.
- Book at reception during your stay, with a minimum of 2 hours’ notice.
One piece of advice
Night cruises are weather dependent. Book as soon as you arrive at the lodge rather than leaving it to your last night. If the weather turns, you may end up missing it altogether with no evening left to reschedule.
What to bring
A light jacket, insect repellent and a dry bag for your camera. Your guide handles the spotlight, but a headtorch is handy for the walk to and from the jetty.
