For safety reasons, our boatmen and guides are not permitted to go further than Sukau village downriver or Bukit Batangan upriver on our regular afternoon river cruises, which last a maximum of two hours. That boundary exists so you are always back at the lodge before dark, and so that in the event of a breakdown we can reach you by radio or phone and get help to you.
Going further
If you want to spend more time on the river, or search for wildlife outside the boundaries of our standard cruises, we offer the option to prebook an extended river cruise on our twin-engine long-range boat. It buys you up to an extra two hours on the water, normally in the afternoon, and takes you as far downriver as Abai or as far upriver as Batu Putih.
The point of the extra range is access to stretches of river that the standard cruises never reach and that see far fewer boats. This is the trip to take if pygmy elephants are high on your list, and it also puts you in front of a wider spread of habitat where orang-utans, langurs, gibbons and hornbills are all in play. As ever, wildlife decides for itself. What we can promise is more river, more time and more quiet.

What to bring
Please note there is no cover, and no toilet, on the boat. Bring sun protection and rain protection, and put anything valuable in a dry bag. Binoculars, water and a hat will all earn their place over four hours on the river.
