Our three-storey wildlife observation tower is the only one of its kind in the area. It gives you a bird’s-eye view of the river on one side and the forest canopy below on the other, which is a completely different way of looking at the Kinabatangan after a week of looking up at it from a boat.
A view you cannot get from the water
From a boat you see the riverbank. From the top of the tower you see over it: the shape of the forest, the oxbow lakes and cleared land beyond, the river bending away in both directions.
Stop off during your walk
The tower sits on the trail network near the lodge, so the usual thing is to stop off here partway through a jungle walk. It is a natural place to catch your breath and for your guide to fill in the background: the history of the surrounding area, how the forest along this stretch of river came to look the way it does, and which of its inhabitants you are most likely to meet. Plenty of guests find this the part of the walk that makes everything else make sense.
Practical notes
- Reached on foot via the forest trails, so wear proper shoes or the lodge’s free rubber boots
- Bring binoculars if you have them, along with water and sun protection
- A guide is required to visit the tower or explore the jungle trails
